The conventional coaching wisdom says: offer a free discovery call to build rapport and convert prospects into clients. And for some coaches in some markets, this still works. But for most, free discovery calls are a time sink that attracts the wrong people and trains the market to undervalue your expertise.
The problem with free discovery calls
- They attract people who are "just exploring" — not ready to invest
- A free slot costs the prospect nothing to book and nothing to cancel
- You spend 30–60 minutes in a sales conversation instead of paid coaching work
- Low-quality prospects ghost you after, wasting your preparation time
- The implicit signal is: my time is free until you decide it's worth paying for
What happens when you charge for the first call
Coaches who switch to paid discovery calls (even at a modest ₹500–₹2,000 or $15–$50) report:
- 70–80% reduction in no-shows and ghosting
- Significantly higher conversion from call to paid program
- Clients who come prepared with real questions
- Better energy in the call — both sides are invested
- An additional revenue stream from calls that don't convert to programs
How to position a paid discovery call
The framing matters. Don't call it a "discovery call" — call it a "Strategy Session," "Clarity Call," or "Initial Assessment." These names signal value and deliverables, not a sales conversation.
On your booking page, describe what the client walks away with: a clear understanding of their situation, a roadmap for next steps, and your recommendations — regardless of whether they continue working with you.
The common objection: "I'll lose potential clients"
You will lose some. The ones who aren't willing to pay ₹1,000 for 45 minutes of focused expertise from a professional coach are almost certainly not going to invest ₹30,000 in a coaching program.
The clients you lose are the ones who cost you the most energy and convert the least. The clients you keep are serious, qualified, and ready to invest.
Setting the right price
For most coaches:
- Life coaches: ₹499–₹1,500 / $10–$30
- Business coaches: ₹1,500–₹5,000 / $30–$75
- Financial advisors: ₹2,000–₹8,000 / $40–$100
- Consultants: ₹2,500–₹10,000 / $50–$150
Some coaches credit this fee toward the full program if the client signs up. This is an optional nice-to-have — not necessary for the model to work.
How to make the switch
You don't need to announce a policy change. Simply update your booking page: remove the free call, add a paid "Strategy Session" service with a description of deliverables. Share the new link. That's it.
